Kevin Rudd says equal voting rights for overseas Australians "near and dear to our hearts"

9 April 2008, 10:25am

Kevin Rudd gave positive responses to questions asked by members of ALP Abroad on issues of voting and pension rights for Overseas Australians in his recent talk to over 1000 Australians at the London School of Economics in London.

Questions were asked by ALP Abroad Treasurer Peter Morris and President Paul Smith.

Peter Morris asked about reciprocal pension rights between Australia and the UK and was told that the there was "negotiations  underway "after years of impass.

Paul Smith prefaced his question with a comment that he "had never felt prouder to be an Australian than Mr Rudd apologised to the Aborigines over the stolen generation issue." which prompted  the audience to erupt into spontaneous applause.

Mr Smith asked about Rudd about whether the million Overseas Australians and the over 200000 in London would be awarded the same voting status as Australians at home. Mr Rudd made it clear that the current situation where only 70000 of the 1000000 overseas Australians voted in 2007 would be reviewed and they would ensure that all "overseas Australians were as enfranchised as legally possible" and the further assured the audience that the voting rights of the millions overseas Australians "is near and dear to our hearts."

Mr Smith said "I am very impressed with Mr Rudd's appreciation of the importance of Overseas Australians to Australia future and his undertanding of how they are  global citizens who wish to be engaged with with their country. The 1000 seat hall that sold out in 15 minutes shows the enthusiastic support the Rudd Labor government enjoys amongst Australians in London."

London is the largest polling station in Australian elections and in recent elections has voted 2 to 1 to the ALP.
