ALP Abroad was formed in 2004 as the successor organisation to the ALP UK Society, which supported Labor in the UK in every election since 1975. We are not part of the ALP's official membership structure but enjoy a close working relationship.
We organise events and campaigns around:
- Ensuring Australians are enrolled to vote as overseas voters
- Keeping overseas Australians engaged with Australian politics
- Ensuring the majority of overseas Australians vote Labor
ALP Abroad has successfully continued to maximise Labor's overseas vote at both federal and state elections. They campaign via advertising in the Australia-related press and by maintaining a presence at key Australian events in London, as well as staffing the polling booth at Australia House for two weeks prior to a federal election, giving out 'How to Vote' documents and information on ALP policies. Australia House in the Strand processes more ballots than any other polling booth at a federal election - including those in Australia - making the work of ALP Abroad extremely important to Labor's cause.
ALP Abroad meets monthly (usually the fourth Tuesday of the month at a central London bar). Previous guest speakers have included Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke, Kevin Rudd, Simon Crean, Bob McMullan, Peter Beattie, Mike Rann, Bill Shorten, Carmen Lawrence and Laurie Ferguson.
